It Is Time

There comes a time

When we hear the sudden call

When the world must come together as one…

You remember that song? The Micheal Jackson’s Haiti song.

It seems that time has come for Nigeria again. For the first time in a long while we have come together to exercise our power and decide who would be our chosen one. Yes, people are not sitting back this time; they are taking charge with their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs). Nobody is saying “shebi they will rig it nooni” with the accompanying tone of defeat. No, this time people are leaving their sick beds to vote!

Amazingly, there are some people who are activists for the two main opposition parties (do other parties even exist anymore? I do not know why they bothered campaigning) but did not vote. An example is my highly flammable friend Wahab. I call him flammable because when it comes to Buhari, he erupts like a volcano and always, always win the argument for Buhari. The same goes for K.C, you can never convince him to have a rethink about Jonathan. Funny enough, these two political warriors who have converted many people to their party did not vote.

Their excuses? No time to go and get their permanent voter’s cards (PVCs). Really ? Is that a valid reason? I would ask.

“Oh, leave that thing joor, do you know how many people I have converted?” they would answer, the glint of self-satisfaction and something like pride in their eyes.

On further enquiries, I found out that many also did not vote, some for valid reasons (no PVC) and others for flimsy reasons. However, this figure is insignificant compared to those that did. One cannot help but feel the sense of excitement and anticipation in the air when visiting the polling units. Some are even comparing it to June 12.

Speculations from many sides indicate that “The Brooms” are ahead in the polls. But that is just what it is; speculation. I would advise we keep calm and wait for the announcement of the results by INEC. While doing so, let us try as much as possible to avoid violence and be very, very careful in the next few days as nothing is certain right now. The country as it is, is in a very delicate position. A slight misstep may push us into war.

One thing I am very glad about though, is that the dreaded BH did not strike as much as I feared. Thank God for that.

While anticipating the outcome of the results, let us remember to pray for the souls of those whose lives were lost at Port Harcourt yesterday.
